Research in Psychology with Dr. Aiello

The best way to get involved in doing undergraduate research with Dr. Aiello is to first contact him ( jraiello@rci.rutgers.edu ) and make him aware of your interests.  You should contact Dr. Aiello sometime in the beginning or middle of the semester before you plan on beginning research with him.  Dr. Aiello will then schedule an interview with you and at that time, he will describe in more detail the research, the requirements, and his expectations.  You will be evaluated by your GPA, your dedication, and your willingness to make a commitment for 2 semesters.  The group has approximately a dozen undergraduate members at one time.

The following section outlines the Course Objectives, the Responsibilities, Requirements, Expectations, and the Final Paper Requirement in doing research with Dr. Aiello:

  • Course Objective:

This course is designed to present students with the opportunity to obtain "hands on" experience with the research process.

The activities that a student will become engaged with includes:

Library Research

Data Collection

Coding

Data Entry

Reading/Discussing relevant articles as well as our research results

  • Responsibilities/Requirements/Expectations:

In general, students will register for two semesters and are required to average approximately ten hours a week.

It is imperative that students take the initiative and inform Dr. Aiello if they feel at any time that they are being "under-utilized".

If a student encounters a busy week or a period of time where they are unable to complete the required ten hours a week, they should be prepared to make it up during the course of the next few weeks.

If a student cannot partake in a task that they committed to do, it is their responsibility to contact another member of the group and arrange for them to "cover."

Students must keep a research log that depicts the research activities that the student was involved with during the course of the week.  The research log includes the specific times that students were engaged in these tasks and most importantly, includes observations, reflections, and thoughts about the research that you have done during the week.

Students must submit a final paper, as detailed below. NOTE: Hours spent compiling sources and writing final paper do not count towards a student's required research team hours.

  • Final Paper Requirement:

A final paper is a requirement for this course.  A student has two options:

A student can complete a comprehensive paper of 30 pages at the end of the second semester.  This entails using at least 24 sources , in the form of research articles, in order to complete the paper.

-or-

A student can complete a paper of 15 pages at the end of each of the two semesters.  This entails using at least 12 sources for each of the two papers.

The paper should answer a research question relating to one of the research topics that the group is investigating.

In order to choose a topic, the student must first look into the research literature, which will determine the availability of relevant studies and will ensure that the body of knowledge matches the student's interests.

Once this step is completed, the student will have to meet with Dr. Aiello so that he can approve the research question that you will be focusing on.  At this time, Dr. Aiello will affirm if your research question is acceptable. (For example, he will describe if your topic is too broad, too narrow, etc.)

Papers are due prior to the beginning of finals for that semester.  Students should always keep a copy of their papers.  A grade of "T" will be assigned if a paper does not reach Dr. Aiello's hands by the deadline.

  • Students also will submit a journal via e-mail one day before the weekly team meeting talking about their research group experiences for the week. Students must save a copy of these journal entries throughout the semester.
