"Communities establish standards
in order to ensure that they are able to fulfill their mission
and keep
members from harm. The University Code of Student Conduct defines
those kinds
of behavior which
violate the standards of the Rutgers University community, and also
provides the mechanismfor addressing
alleged violations. In doing so, the Code protects
the rights of those accused of
offenses (respondents)
by providing due process, while also
protecting victims of those offenses,
and the University community
as a whole."

Key points of the Code of Student Conduct:
The Code of Student Conduct was developed over an eighteen month
period with
the assistance of students, faculty, and administration from
all three
campuses, as well as legal and student judicial affairs experts.
After being reviewed by the University Senate and the Board of Governors,
the Code of
Student Conduct was adopted in January 1995.
The Code is not intended to define misconduct in exhaustive terms,
or to replicate
a criminal code.
The Code generally governs student behavior on University
premises.
The disciplinary process can, however, be invoked off
University
premises if another member of the university community
is the victim
of misconduct (as this may have a direct impact on the
University
community) or the misconduct takes place at a University
sponsored
activity or event, or involves a University recognized
organization.
The University also reserves the right to take necessary
and appropriate
action to protect the safety and well-being of the
campus community.
Such action may include taking disciplinary action
against those
students whose behavior off University premises indicates
that they
may pose a substantial danger to others in the University
community.
