View of Pevensey's town centre from within the Roman walls. The walls date to approximately 290 A.D. and represent one of the most complete Roman forts still standing in England.

The main gate to Pevensey Castle. Unfortunately, the castle interior was closed the day we visited, but the castle grounds and Roman ruins were still worth the trip.

Pevensey Castle - The first castle built by William the Conqueror upon invading England in 1066.  The castle was built within the ruined Roman fort of Anderida, which dates to 290 A.D.

During World War II, Pevensey Castle was fortified due to its proximity to the English Channel.  Pillboxes for machine gunners were built in the castle walls and camouflaged to blend in with the ruins.  So the castle represents nearly 2 millennia of military history.
