Subject: [qch] QUEST COFFEE HOUR Note 25153 by INTERNETThe following message was sent today to the Rev. Tom Scott by +Jeffery Rowthorn, Bishop in Charge of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe. I had forwarded Father Scott's note QCH 25153 to him, which I thought he would find interesting. As you can see by this text, he has requested that this message be shared as widely as possible.

Dear Fr. Scott,
I have just read your letter to Louie Crew which is dated September 9, 1998.
Let me urge you not to be influenced by the amazingly unbalanced reporting of the Lambeth Conference. Your fears that the original agenda items of the Conference were overlooked are quite unfounded, I am happy to say.
Of the 94 resolutions adopted by the Conference, only one (Resolution 1:1 0) addresses the issue of human sexuality. The reports from the four sections contain a total of 145pages, of which less than 2 pages have to do with human sexuality (Section 1 Report, pp. 16-17). By contrast, there are five pages devoted to the environment and 8 BD pages to international debt and economic justice. An entire section report of 43 pages is devoted to evangelism and mission. Furthermore, the bishops debated human sexuality for no more time than was given to each of the major plenary presentations on international debt, evangelism, relations with Islam, and the concerns and needs of the young.
I urge you to read the four section reports and the full text of the 94 resolutions as soon as you can get your hands on them. The preoccupation with the issues of sexuality in both the church and the secular press and on the Internet, together with the resulting woeful ignorance and sometimes willful distortion of what actually happened during the three weeks of the Lambeth Conference, may well disturb you as much as it does me. The best way to counteract that imbalance is to let the reports and resolutions speak for themselves. They give a very different, very encouraging and very challenging message.
Please share this message as widely as possible.
