Strong Arm Tactics:

A History and Statistical Analysis of the Professional Quarterback

Quarterback Durability

In the book, I listed the 26 quarterbacks who compiled streaks of at least 58 consecutive starts as a measure of durability. Another way to measure the most resilient quarterbacks is by honoring those who played the most seasons and the most games. The following two tables list quarterbacks who played at least 15 years in the NFL and quarterbacks who played in at least 150 league games through the 2006 season. The one flaw is evident right at the top. Because football encyclopedias do not indicate the number of games played per position, George Blanda's game numbers probably are inflated by around 100 games in which he only appeared as a kicker. Next in line in games played is Earl Morrall, but his 255 games include games in which he only appeared as a punter during his early years in the league and games he only appeared as a kick holder throughout his career. We do know that Fran Tarkenton only appeared as a quarterback during his 246 games. Brett Favre is poised to pass Tarkenton in 2007. One final note, Tom Tupa is included here, but he only played quarterback in four of his 16 seasons.
