Tall Quarterbacks
Quarterbacks have gotten taller during the course of the NFL. The first 6'3" passer was Bernie Masterson of the Bears in the 1930s. The first passers to reach 6'4" were Glenn Dobbs of the All America Football Conference and forgettable Steeler Joe Gasparella in the late 1940s. Even into the 1960s, 6'4" still was considered as very tall for a quarterback, but 6'5" Roman Gabriel proved that someone that size did not have to be stiff, immobile, geeky and injury-prone as other 6'5" quarterbacks from the 1960s and 1970s were. It wasn't until the 1980s, that 6'5" became a desirable height with such stars as Boomer Esiason, Bernie Kosar, Jim Everett and Vinny Testaverde. They have since been joined by so many more stars like Drew Bledsoe, Peyton Manning, Brad Johnson, Kerry Collins, Byron Leftwich, Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers that 6'5" is practically the current standard. While several quarterbacks have measured more than that, none has achieved much success yet. Here is a listing of all quarterbacks above 6'4" through the 2006 season.
