Logging on to STN

Hours and Availability

The STN Chemical Abstracts Service is available to Rutgers users during these times:
Monday through Friday 5PM to 5AM
     Saturday 3AM to 6PM
     Sunday 6PM to 5AM Monday

You need to use a loginid and password to gain access to the STN databases. You may use any of the pairs supplied for your class.

A Sample Login Session

Access to the STN service is via the Internet. You first need to log on to your Rutgers e-mail account. From the clam% or crab% prompt, you will initiate a telnet session as follows:

clam% telnet stnc.cas.org

When the system indicates "Connected to stnc.cas.org," hit [ENTER]

The system will respond, "Welcome to STN International! Enter X:" This prompt is calling for your authorized port. The port you will use is the letter i. Type

I [ENTER]

The system will next prompt you for your loginid and then password. Choose one of the loginid/password pairs you have been given and enter that information.

The system next prompts "Terminal (Enter 1, 2, 3, or ?):" You should enter

3 [ENTER]

You are now in the STN system and are ready to choose a database and search. Refer to the handout Using Chemical Abstracts Online for details on how to best proceed.

Logging Off

When you are done searching, be sure to logoff. Even at the discounted rates the Paul Robeson Library is being charged, the Chemical Abstracts databases are very expensive so we do not want to leave any unused connections open. Search costs are based on time logged on, number of search terms, and number of records displayed. To logoff, type

logoff [ENTER]

You will be prompted, "Logoff (Y)/N/Hold:"

Respond Y [ENTER]

and the normal search costs will display on the screen.
