Elasticity
Review of stress, strain, displacement, principal stress, Mohr’s circle,
invariants. Equilibrium and compatibility conditions. Thermal
stress.
Stress Analysis
Airy’s stress functions, stresses around hole, conformal mapping.
Contact mechanics, Bousinnesq solution, axisymmetric solutions, tangential
forces, Hertzian contact.
Numerical Techniques for Solution of PDE’s
Finite differences, method of successive approximations. Finite
element modeling, theoretical basis, solution sequence and techniques,
use of the ANSYS FE package, including individual project. Solution
of elasticity and other problems, static and dynamic solutions.
Modes of Failure
Buckling, jamming. Fracture, stress intensity, superposition,
stability, crack paths, crystals. Yielding, criteria, crack tip plasticity,
Dugdale, Barenblatt, etc., initiation theory.
Indentation
Hertzian fracture, sliding contact, plastic, elastoplastic deformation.
Pointed indenters. High velocity impact / erosion by solid and liquid
particles, impact on glasses, composites, protective coatings.
Tribology
Roughness, characterization, measurement, bearing curve. Amonton’s
laws of friction, theoretical basis. Wear mechanisms, identification.
Lubrication. Adhesion.
Optical Fiber Strength & Fatigue
Test techniques, proof testing, reliability predictions, coatings.

Stress Measurement
Photoelasticity, Moiré, speckle, strain gages.
Applied Statistics
Review of fundamentals, analysis of one variable, the straight line,
fitting techniques, probability distributions, maximum likelihood, the
Weibull distribution. Monte Carlo techniques.
Thin Film Mechanics
Adhesion, measurement. Residual stresses, measurement.
