The list got its name from a quotation of Glenn Gould about the nature of his personality. Gould stated that if he were any key, he'd be f-minor, because "it's rather dour, halfway between complex and stable, between upright and lascivious, between gray and highly tinted...There is a certain obliqueness."
In the spirit of the association Friends of Glenn Gould, which was organized by The Glenn Gould Foundation, F_Minor was created in August of 1995 to promote public awareness of Gould's work and ideas, and to serve as a forum for those who are interested in Gould's work to communicate with one another over the Internet, a medium Gould surely would have appreciated.
The membership of the list is diverse with about 300 people of all ages from all over the world on it including members from: Japan, Australia, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Denmark, Turkey, Sweden, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada, USA, UK, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. Knowledge of Gould on the part of members spans from professional expertise to the interest of casual listeners.
