Workshop III

Staff Communication and Consistency:
Dealing With Stress and Burnout Among Direct Care/Supervisory Staff

Workshop Description:
This presentation will highlight an issue that has had a growing impact in the field of developmental disabilities. Burnout and turnover of staff members who are entrusted with the behavior programming responsibilities of individuals with developmental disabilities will be explored. This workshop addresses the issue of burnout from a multi-factor perspective as advanced by Project Natural Setting Therapeutic Management (NSTM). Project NSTM's nearly 25-year history of providing behavioral consultation and training to staff members in community/ residential, academic and institutional settings will be brought to bear in discussing this pervasive problem.

Participants will be exposed to treatment issues including improvement in staff communication, development of an inclusive team approach, and stress management and problem solving skills. The audience will integrate these treatment approaches into the behavior experiences and wide ranging clinical settings provided. Hands-on exposure to stress management techniques will provide participants with firsthand experience as to how such techniques can be integrated into their settings.
