Workshop Description:
Problems have long existed in measuring the competence of professional
staff entrusted with the behavioral programming responsibilities
of individuals with developmental disabilities. Many of the measurement
tools currently utilized assess knowledge of behavioral principles
through vocabulary, rather then an individual's ability to perform
technology. This workshop will highlight assessment techniques
utilized by Project NSTM to measure staff and parents competence.
The Behavioral Role-play Activities Test (BRAT), an instrument
developed by Project NSTM personnel, will be presented as an example
of methods for measuring behavioral competence. The BRAT is based
upon the use of the applied behavior analytic method and as such,
provides professionals with an empirically supported method of
assessing competence.
Participants will be provided with hands-on training in the use
and scoring of the BRAT in order to provide them with an assessment
model that may be used in their respective setting. Video taped
role-play will be employed with participants constructing competency
scripts based on the unique requirements existing in their settings.
These will subsequently be used as models in the videotaped role-play.
