Workshop VI
Natural Setting Therapeutic Management
A Multiple-Model Approach to Maintaining Community Integration

Workshop Description:

NSTM has been successfully practiced by its university-affiliated project in a wide variety of settings. The workshop is designed to present the multiple-model format in some detail. Each model will be presented separately, highlighting applications to overall program planning.

Since NSTM focuses on creating an efficient management system within whatever setting if is practiced, the management forms and interacting systems will be demonstrated with an eye toward developing variations for participant's use.

Our goal will be to have the participants leave with both a conceptual and practical understanding of NSTM in order to broaden community based programming in their areas. Attitude change will be fostered by reference to over 25 years of our data.

Workshop Objectives:
1. To provide participants with a brief overview of Natural Setting Therapeutic Management (NSTM) as it has been employed with individuals who present challenging behaviors in New Jersey.

2. To provide participants with both a practical and conceptual understanding of three major components of NSTM:

  • Assessment of the natural setting
  • Decision making as it impacts upon intervention
  • Management issues.

3. To promote the use of the NSTM program at the participants' work site, by integrating materials brought forward by participants into the NSTM Multi-Model System.
