The Office of Institutional Research is actively engaged in conducting a series of institutional self-studies, many of which are through the administration of surveys. Surveys are planned on various constituencies in the University, such as students, faculty, staff and alumni.
The following is a partial list of surveys conducted through our office:
Academic Support Needs Assessment Program Survey
In an effort to understand how students use and feel about the extensive academic support structure that exists at Rutgers University, Professor Robert Parelius, in cooperation with the Office of Institutional Research and Academic Planning, has been surveying and interviewing undergraduates throughout the University. To date, two reports, one each for the New Brunswick and Camden campuses, have been produced. A third study is being prepared for the Newark campus during the spring 1997 semester.
Continuing Student Survey
A self-administered questionnaire designed to obtain data on student employment and academic achievement and integration was sent to a random sample of Rutgers undergraduates between the months of November 1995 and March 1996. This survey was designed in conjunction with a graduate research methods course in the Department of Sociology, taught by Professor Steven Hansell.
Drop Out/Attrition Survey
A survey of students who voluntarily withdrew from Rutgers during the recent past was administered in the Fall of 1995. More specifically, this survey was administered to former Rutgers students who did not continue their studies at the University for three consecutive semesters between 1987 and 1992. These students were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire that asked students their reasons for withdrawing and opinions/evaluations of Rutgers, as well as asking about their educational and employment activities since leaving the University.
Graduating Senior Survey
In the spring of 1992, the Office of Institutional Research and Academic Planning conducted a survey of graduating seniors. The main objective of the study was to give graduating students an opportunity to provide feedback about their student experiences at Rutgers and to identify their future plans. The self-administered questionnaire covered the students' academic experiences and personal goals, career and life plans, evaluations of services at Rutgers, perceptions of student life experiences, and involvement in extracurricular activities. A second administration of this survey to current seniors is planned for spring 1997.
Study Abroad Survey
During the early part of the spring 1996 semester, the Office of Institutional Research and Academic Planning administered a questionnaire to a random sample of first- and second-year Rutgers undergraduates. This questionnaire was designed to elicit the awareness of and interest in the Rutgers Study Abroad Program among lower division students.
Faculty Computer Use Survey
The Faculty Computer Use and Accessibility Survey was administered by the Office of Institutional Research and Academic Planning to all Rutgers faculty during late fall, 1992. Who among the faculty use computers, the types of computer hardware and software used, the location at which faculty use computers, the computing services they access and the required use of computers in the courses they teach were all areas of faculty computing activity asked in the survey.
Faculty Workload Survey
The Office of Institutional Research and Academic Planning was asked by the Committee on Faculty Workload to assist the work of the committee in obtaining information about faculty work activities at Rutgers University. One aspect of this effort was the administration of a survey in spring 1994 to randomly selected faculty that measured the type and amount of work that faculty do.
Employee Trip Reduction Survey
As part of the Rutgers University's compliance with the State of New Jersey Employer Trip Reduction Program, the Office of Institutional Research and Academic Planning produced and administered a survey of University employees.
