Extracurricular Activities

The 1997 Graduating Seniors were administered a Graduating Student Opinion Survey at the end of the 1997 Spring Semester. The results presented below are for 3,315 graduates of the 1997 class. These results are compared to a 1992 survey of graduating seniors, the last year in which Rutgers administered this survey.

Two-thirds of Rutgers' Graduating Students Participated in Extracurricular Activities as Undergraduates

Participation by Percentage in Selected Extracurricular Activities

Of the responding students, 68% said that they were involved in extracurricular activities, which is a percentage point lower than the overall participation rate in 1992. As in 1992, students were most likely to be involved in academic and professional organizations, with 31% of the 1997 respondents reporting being involved in such organizations. Community services organizations attracted a slightly higher percentage of the 1997 graduates (22%) than the 1992 graduates (19%). As in 1992, the 1997 graduates showed high rates of participation in honor societies (21%), intramural athletics (17%), ethnic organizations (15%) and Greek life (11%).
