Remediation/Developmental Preparation

Rutgers University students are required to demonstrate proficiency in the basic skills of English and mathematics. Through testing, student skill levels are assessed and course placements made accordingly. Individuals lacking proficiency in one of the areas are required to take remedial courses for which no credit is offered toward the degree. Remedial courses ensure that students who were underprepared at the K-12 level are more fully able to succeed and benefit from higher education.

Please note the following: remedial courses can contain both remedial and nonremedial students; Rutgers, unlike many institutions, considers intermediate algebra to be part of remedial mathematics; and each campus of Rutgers develops its own remedial placement algorithms and course programs, consistent with the needs of its students.
