Financial Aid Availability
Rutgers University is committed to accessible higher
education for all academically deserving students, regardless
of family financial circumstances. Thus, even though the fiscal
constraints of the last few years have made it necessary to increase
tuition and fees, the university has made every effort to offset
these increases with financial support for students with demonstrated
financial need. Student assistance is offered as an aid "package,"
consisting of a combination of different types of awards (scholarships,
grants, loans, employment). In 1995-96, these aid packages contained
nearly 76,000 undergraduate awards, equaling almost $143.2 million
in financial aid. When compared with 1994-95, these levels represent
over 5,000 more awards and a funding increase of $16.4 million
(or 12.9%). As in 1994-95, 100% of undergraduates who applied
for aid and enrolled at Rutgers were offered some form of financial
aid. Approximately 21,100 students, or 63% of all undergraduates,
were aided through the University Office of Financial Aid in
1995-96. This number represents an increase of 1,546 more students.
These increases were due primarily to additional borrowing on
the part of students, the result of a leveling off of available
grant dollars. Consistent with the previous year, 100% of the
undergraduates who applied for aid and enrolled at Rutgers received
some form of financial assistance.
