Rutgers recognizes the need to translate the fruits
of its research into applications which benefit government, business
and industry, and, ultimately, all citizens of the state. The
initiatives in this area, from professional programs to Agricultural
Extension Service activities, are far too numerous to cite in
this report. What follows is a description of one kind of effort
being made in this area: development and transfer of new technology.
New products and services are tangible outcomes
of research at the university. For this to occur, the technology
that derives from this research must be transferred to the marketplace,
a process which begins with the disclosure of inventions and
the filing of patent applications. Since fiscal year 1991, the
Office of Corporate Liaison and Technology Transfer at Rutgers
has disclosed over 520 inventions, a testament to the fruitfulness
of the research conducted at Rutgers. Since fiscal year 1991,
Rutgers received more than $21 million in gross royalties from
technology, income which in turn supports ongoing research and
development activities. The production and transfer of new technology
at Rutgers enhances the ability of businesses and industries
within the state to compete nationally and internationally.
