  • Professor Tuğrul Özel has been Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering since 2008 and the Director of Manufacturing & Automation Research Laboratory at Rutgers University since 2002. He received a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1998.  

  • Professor Özel's research interests include advanced manufacturing, precision machining, micro-manufacturing, additive manufacturing, laser processing, predictive process modeling, process simulations, and process optimization.

  • Professor Özel teaches courses on advanced manufacturing, automated manufacturing, computer integrated manufacturing, computer control of manufacturing systems, production systems and simulation modeling at Rutgers. His research program mainly focuses on computational modeling, physics-based simulation, and optimization of advanced manufacturing processes at multi-scale (e.g.  high speed machining, micro-milling, laser micro-machining, laser material processing, additive selective laser melting/sintering, biomanufacturing processes). His research has been well funded (over $1 million as single or sole PI) by National Science Foundation (4 awards), DoC National Institute of Standards and Technology, Taiho Kogyo Tribology Research Foundation, NASA Space Grant Consortium, and industrial companies such as United Technologies and 3M Company.

  • Professor Özel is the co-author of four edited books “Intelligent Machining”, (ISTE-Wiley, 2009); “Micro-Manufacturing: Design and Manufacturing of Micro-Products”, (Wiley, 2011); “Biomedical Device Design, Prototyping, and Manufacturing”, (Wiley, 2016), and “Innovations in Manufacturing, (Wiley, forthcoming in 2019)

  • Professor Özel is the Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems  since 2008,  the Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering  since 2018 , and has served as member on the Editorial Board of eight other international journals including International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture (2013-), Production Engineering: Research and Development (2013-), International Journal of Manufacturing Research (2013-), International Journal of Machining & Machinability of Materials (2006-),  International Journal of Manufacturing Engineering (2012-2017), and International Journal of Computational Materials Science and Surface Engineering (2009-2017). He has also served as Guest Editor to several renown international journals. He has been a member of scientific or program committee over 40 international conferences.

  • Professor Özel is a senior member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, North American Manufacturing Research Institute, and an elected associate member of CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering . Professor Özel is the only elected member of CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering from Rutgers, The State University University of New Jersey.

  • Professor Özel  has published over 140 research articles in leading research journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. His articles received numerous recognitions from international journals for receiving high citations and downloads.

  • Professor Özel  is also repeatedly listed in The Marquis Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders.
