BIOGRAPHY

  • Professor Tuğrul Özel has been Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering since 2008 and the Director of Manufacturing & Automation Research Laboratory at Rutgers University since 2002. He received a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1998. Prof. Özel previously worked as Research Associate at NSF funded Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing and Assistant Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Cleveland State University. He was a summer faculty fellow at NASA Glenn Research Center in summer of 1999.

  • Professor Özel teaches courses on advanced manufacturing processes, automated manufacturing systems, automation and computer integrated manufacturing, engineering economy, computer control of manufacturing systems, production systems and simulation modeling at Rutgers. His research program mainly focuses on computational modeling, physics-based simulation, and optimization of advanced manufacturing processes at multi-scale (e.g.  high speed machining, micro-milling, laser micro-machining, laser material processing, additive selective laser melting/sintering, biomanufacturing processes). His research has been well funded (over $1 million) by National Science Foundation, DoC National Institute of Standards and Technology, NASA Space Grant Consortium, and industry.

  • Professor Özel is the co-author of four edited books “Intelligent Machining”, (ISTE-Wiley, 2009); “Micro-Manufacturing: Design and Manufacturing of Micro-Products”, (Wiley, 2011); “Biomedical Device Design, Prototyping, and Manufacturing”, (Wiley, 2016), and “Modern Manufacturing Processes, (Wiley, forthcoming in 2018)

  • Professor Özel is the Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems  since 2008 as well as member on the editorial board of eight international journals including International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, Production Engineering Research and Development, International Journal of Manufacturing Research, International Journal of Machining & Machinability of Materials,  International Journal of Manufacturing Engineering, and International Journal of Computational Materials Science and Surface Engineering. He has also served as Guest Editor to several renown international journals. He has been a member of scientific or program committee over 30 international conferences.

  • Professor Özel is a senior member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, North American Manufacturing Research Institute, and an elected associate member of CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering . Professor Özel is the only elected member of CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering from Rutgers, The State University University of New Jersey.

  • Professor Özel  has published over 100 research articles in leading research journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. His articles received numerous recognitions from international journals for receiving high citations and downloads. Some of his publications in the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture repeatedly appeared among  the Most Cited Articles and were ranked #1 and #3 on the Top10 Cited articles in the past five years (2005-2009). He has also received the Most Cited Articles 2005 to 2009 Award from the Journal of Materials Processing Technology. Professor Özel's articles were ranked #1 in Top 25 Hottest Articles in Engineering in the International Journal of Machine Tools & Manufacture and ranked #2 in Top 25 Hottest Articles in Engineering- International Journal of Mechanical Sciences in the past five years.

  • Professor Özel  is also repeatedly listed in The Marquis Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders.

  • Overall, his journal articles have received high number of citations in renowned databases such as SCI-Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar as summarized in the table below.
