Preface

Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey recognizes the importance of animals in teaching and research in the natural and biomedical sciences. The University promotes the right of investigators to use animals in teaching and research and promotes the humane care and use of animals for research in accordance with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations and guidelines.

This manual is intended for use by all Rutgers faculty, staff and students who work with laboratory animals on all of the Rutgers Campuses.  The purposes of the manual are several:

First, to provide information on policies and procedures specific to the use of animals at Rutgers.

Second, to provide investigators with general information about laboratory animal research in order to promote the humane care of animals and a high quality of animal research at the University.

Third, to meet specific requirements for training in certain subjects as mandated by federal policy and law.

Laboratory Animal Services is a service organization. Our reason for being is to assist the faculty who use animals in their research and teaching. I have attempted to include in the manual answers to most of the questions asked of Laboratory Animal Services on a frequent basis. I have also included references which provide further details on subjects discussed in the manual. If I have succeeded, the manual should be a resource that you will find useful again and again. I encourage you, however, to call on Laboratory Animal Services whenever you have questions, suggestions, or problems.

I hope that you find this manual helpful. If you have any suggestions for additions or improvements for future updates, please send them to me.

Robert L. Harris, D.V.M.
