Additional equipment is available for loan to students with disabilities at the NJ Adaptive Technology Center

Please contact your Campus Coordinator for further information or call 609-771-2610.  The Adaptive Technology Center for New Jersey Colleges is located at the College of New Jersey, Trenton.

The following technology is currently available at the Rutgers University Campus Computing Labs.  Please contact your RUCS ADA representative for the exact location of the requested technology or submit a request via email to mcoyle@rci.rutgers.edu.

Visual Impairments 

    An Audio Interface is provided as part of the Macs OS. It works with most applications and follows mouse movement on the screen. It only needs to be activated for much of the on screen activity to be read. Available in New Brunswick Computer Labs.
    Close View for the Macintosh is a screen magnifier that enlarges a portion of the screen to the full size of the screen. This low vision solution follows all on-screen mouse movement. Once this feature is enabled there is little that needs to be done to customize it. The magnificaton level can be changed to accomidate different levels of visual impairments. Available in New Brunswick Computer Labs.
    Zoom Lens is another screen magnifier available for the Macs. This application magnifies the area around the pointer in a seperate window. It is also a low vision solution. Zoom Lens operates in a similar way to Close View. It is just as simple to activate and customize. Available in New Brunswick Computer Labs.
    Simple Text is an application on the Macs that can read text files out loud using the built in voice synthesizer and speaker. The voice options can be controlled through the control panel. Available in New Brunswick  Computer Labs.
    OCR Hardware and Software is available in the Digital Media Lab in ARCb. Scanned text documents can be converted to a computer text file that can be further manipulated with screen readers or optical magnification. The application and scanner configuration might prove difficult for visually impaired users to operate. There are always consultants available in the DML to help with any problems that might be encountered. Available in New Brunswick  Computer Labs.

    SuperNova reader-magnifier is now available in New Brunswick Computer Labs.  Supernova gives users with visual impairment the ability to access Windows with magnification, speech or braille.

Hearing Impairments 

    Visual Warnings for Windows Sounds are part of Windows built in "Accessibility Options" in the Windows control panel. It generates a visual warning when the system would normally make a sound. It can also give a caption for speech and sound made. Available in Camden, Newark and New Brunswick Computing Labs.
    Beep Flash is available on the Macs to provide visual cues for system sounds and error warnings. Available in New Brunswick Computing Labs.
These features just need to be activated in the systems control panels. 

Mobility/Orthopedic Impairments 

    Adjustible Tables are available in most of the computer labs. The height is adjustable to allow for wheelchair access and any other special needs. Available in all campus labs. Available in Camden, Newark and New Brunswick  Computing Labs.

    The Virtual Keyboard by MiloSoft gives the computer user on-screen access to the keyboard. All keyboard functions can be controlled with the mouse. Available in New Brunswick Computing Labs.

    Microsoft Windows "Accessibility Options" also provides for an on-screen keyboard.

Learning Disabilities 

    Dragon Naturally Speaking is voice recognition software which allows the user to speak to a computer.  The computer records what the user says.  The software has a vocabulaty of 45,000 active words and must be used in a quiet area to eliminate background noise. Dragon Naturally speaking Preferred Software, v.3 with Corel with WP8 Suite is available for use in the Camden Computer Lab located in the Robeson Library, Rm. 116.
    Simple Text  provides voice output for printed text on Macs. It can be of assistance to users with reading and comprehension difficulties. Available in New Brunswick Computing Labs.
