Structural geology of the Newark basin. This map shows the distribution of faults within (blue), bounding (red), and outside (black) the Newark basin (yellow). The blue faults are mostly normal faults, with some strike-slip faults. The red faults are also mostly normal faults and make up the border fault system. The map also shows the location of diabase dikes (thin igneous intrusions that cut across layering). Strike and dip symbols show the attitude of sedimentary layers within the basin. The short tick mark on the symbols indicate the direction in which bedding dips (i.e., the direction it is inclined). Most beds in the basin are inclined to the northwest.
