Geologic map of northern NJ. The Ramapo fault (heavy dark line) separates the Newark rift basin from the Highlands and Valley & Ridge physiographic provinces. Other major faults in the Newark basin are the Flemington and Hopewell faults. The Newark basin is overlapped by Cretaceous and younger rocks of the Coastal Plain. On this map, bluish-green represents Triassic sedimentary rocks in the Newark basin; olive green, Jurassic sedimentary rocks; red, Jurassic lava flows; and reddish purple, Jurassic intrusive igneous rocks.
