Field of Normal Faults

Large number of normal faults offsetting the top surface of a bed, Solite Quarry, Danville rift basin, near Eden, North Carolina. The bed dips away from the viewer; the faults (dark) dip toward the viewer. Coins have been placed on some of the faults. For each fault, displacement is greatest at or near the center of the fault and decreases toward the fault tips. Note also that smaller-length faults have smaller maximum displacements.
