Intrafolial Folds

Intrafolial folds in a metapelitic gneiss, Switzerland. The limbs of the folds are subparallel to the foliation (and in part define the foliation) and form as a result of extensive progressive shortening. Note the extreme thinning of the white layers in the limbs of the folds compared to the hinges. R&H photo.
