Length-Displacement Scaling

Photo
Scott Young (Rutgers College '96) measures maximum displacement on small fault scarp, Solite Quarry, Danville rift basin, near Eden, NC. The faults visible here indicate that longer-length faults have higher displacements than shorter-length faults. A compilation of 201 measurements indicates that maximum displacement (D) is linearly related to fault length (L): D=0.03*L. RWS photo.
