Fault Breccia

High-angle fault zone (marked by purple arrows) cutting columnar basalt at Old Wife Point, Fundy rift basin, Five Islands, Nova Scotia. The columnar basalt has been brecciated in the fault zone, which is best developed near the green arrow. The deflection of the cooling joints indicates that the right side of the fault moved up and the left side moved down; slickenlines on the fault surface also indicate a substantial strike-slip component of movement.
