Red Sea

Photo
Satellite photograph of the Sinai triple junction. The Red Sea is an extensional basin that is opening in the direction of the white arrows. The Gulf of Suez is underlain by the Suez rift, which is opening in the direction of the black arrows. A large part of the opening of the Red Sea is transferred to the left-lateral Dead Sea transform fault, shown schematically by the thin black line with half-arrows. The Dead Sea occupies a large pull-apart basin developed at a releasing bend in the Dead Sea fault.
