Fault Separation

Photo
Granitic host rock intruded by three differently oriented aplite dikes and cut by a brittle-ductile shear zone. Note how two of the dikes indicate left-lateral separation, while the third indicates right-lateral separation, which is contradictory. This is because the net-slip vector is inclined to the actual outcrop surface. This example illustrates how separation may not be indicative of the actual net slip. Photo credit: John Ramsay.
