Department of Biomedical Engineering, School of Engineering, New Brunswick; Rutgers
Areas of Interest
Cell analysis, optical imaging and spectroscopy. apoptosis, morphological phenotypes and patterns of gene expression during early cancer development.
Academic Interests and Plans
My research is focused on developing novel, minimally invasive optical technology to track signaling pathways and analyze the function of genes within living cells. My team's work lies at the interface of optics and cell biology and combines instrumentation design microscopy, tissue culture, genetic manipulation, and numerical simulation of optical phenomena, such as light scattering by cells. We are currently engaged in studying mitochondrial alterations in apoptosis and defining optical parameters to characterize morphological alterations that result from abnormal expression of pro- or anti- apoptotic proteins, and abnormal mechanisms of cell death. One of our long-term goals is to understand the relationship between gene expression and subcellular structure and organization during early cancer development.
