Loan Counseling Session

Who, When, Why, What, Where

Who must attend a loan counseling session?

If you obtained a federal student loan while attending Rutgers University, or from a previous school, you must attend a loan counseling session before leaving.

When must I attend an loan counseling session?

This is the part that confuses students the most please read this section very carefully.

You must attend an loan counseling session when you cease to be enrolled as at least a half-time student at Rutgers for any reason. What does this mean in plain English? If you are not enrolled on Rutgers' registrar system for six (6) or more credits for the current semester, you must attend a loan counseling session.

What about Leave of Absence, or Study Abroad?

You must attend a loan counseling session because you are not officially enrolled at Rutgers University. Even if you have an Approved Leave of Absence you must attend the session. However, there is one exception to this rule.

You do not have to attend an loan counseling session if you only have a Federal Stafford Loan and your absence will only be sixty (60) days or less. Please remember, that the Stafford Loans you are receiving here at Rutgers are Federal Direct Stafford Loans, not Federal Stafford Loans, and a semester here at Rutgers is more than sixty (60) days.

Why must I attend an loan counseling session?

First and foremeost, it is federally required. Secondly, important information that you need to know about your loan will be reviewed. There are numerous options available to you regarding the repayment of your loan, deferments, and loan consolidation.

What information will be covered at the loan counseling sessions?

  • Federal loan programs at Rutgers.
  • Loan repayment.
  • Deferments.
  • Cancellation.
  • Loan consolidation, Direct Loan Consolidation vs. Sallie Mae Consolidation.
  • Debt management.
