Loan Repayment

Repayment begins at the end of the grace period. Loans may be billed on a monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly basis at the discretion of the school. The repayment period may not exceed 10 years.

Two factors affect the repayment of a Perkins loan, when the money was borrowed and how much was borrowed.

When:

If you received your first Perkins loan on or after 10/1/92 then the minimum amount you would be billed is $120.00  a quarter. Unless you received a previous  Perkins loan prior to 10/1/92,  then your minimum payment would be $90.00 a quarter.

Perkins Loans disbursed between 10/1/81 and 9/30/92 have a minimum payment of at least $90.00 a quarter.

How Much:

If you borrowed $1,500 and were billed at $120/Qtr. you would be in repayment for just over 3 years. At $90/Qtr. repayment would last about 5 years.

If you borrowed $3,000 and were billed at $120/Qtr. you would be in repayment for about 8 years. Instead of the minimum $90/Qtr., the payments would go up to $96.77 and would last 10 years.

As your loan increases, so does the loan payment and the length of the repayment period. The amount of interest paid also increases dramatically.
