Development: Working with Sounds
Overall, I think that the ability to play sounds is both cool and cheesy.
If I could have sounds autoplay with a page (probably after a 'page break')
that would be kinda cool.
The problem with sounds is that it is hard to get good sounds that are meaningful to
a text that are not soundbites that are potentially copyrighted by someone.
That being said I will teach you how to easily make your own should you wish to.

- First, you need a 'sound' preferably a .wav if you are a novice. Advanced users should
be able to convert to a .wav or create their own sound. Newbies look around the net for a SHORT
.wav to test.
- Now you need an application to convert to the picky format of:
8 bit, single-channel (unsigned-mono), 16khz sample rate, .WAV file
- I looked for an application that would do this successfully. My criteria were that
the app be cheap, easy and run on Win 9*.
I decided that Cooledit96 by Syntrillium (http://www.syntrillium.com/cooledit/index.html)
was the best choice. It is about 2 Megs, shareware and has to registration levels: lite for $25 and Basic $50
- Essentially all you need to do is:
- open your sound (File-->Open)
- then choose Edit-->Convert Sample Type and set:
- the sample rate to 16000 Hz (= 16kHz)
- the channel to mono
- the resolution to 8-bit
- ...and click OK
- and file-->Save As (.WAV)
- I'm not sure if the RocketWriter automatically sucks the sound files in, so I select follow links and
include images just for the heck of it..too lazy to experiment tonite
- the syntax (HTML is: <a href = "name_of_sound.wav">Clickable text</a>
If you have any other suggestions please mail them in. Be aware that there are tons of
sound editors that will take out pops, chop, remix etc. that you can use.
Sorry that I am not including any demos or sounds. There are many archives of WAV's out there
but I am a bit unsure as to copyright for soundbites for this sort of publishing.
