Common name: Grasshopper
Order name: Orthoptera (ortho, straight; ptera, wings)
Most Orthoptera are plant feeders, and some of these are important pests of cultivated plants.
Many of the Orthoptera are large and common. They are usually most abundant during late summer and the fall.
Some of the best known singers of the insect world are the grasshoppers and crickets. The songs of these insects are produced by stridulation (rubbing one body part against another).
Many species have a long ovipositor (females), which is sometimes as long as the body. In others it is short and more or less hidden.
