Summer Session -- New Brunswick |
SPANISH 940
Spanish Language Institute / MAT Program
This summer, Rutgers University is initiating an innovative
Spanish Language Institute under the auspices of the MAT Program of the Department
of Spanish and Portuguese. This institute responds to the need for continued
professional development of Spanish language teachers who will be dealing with
the New Jersey core curriculum standards which require testing for world language
proficiency starting in the fourth grade. It also offers the possibility of
completing all course requirements for the MAT in Spanish in three
summers, depending on enrollment. The course requirements of 24 credit hours
would be followed by a special 6-credit academic year individual project following
the final summer of course work.
The MAT in Spanish is designed for individuals already teaching
Spanish, however, these courses potentially may be applied toward state certification.
In this initial program, teachers will have the opportunity
to take immersion courses in foreign language teaching methodology and Spanish
language in addition to one specialized topic course on the Hispanic Child in
Literature and Culture. In subsequent summers, the two core immersion courses
will be supplemented with other specialized courses - usually three per summer
- geared especially to K-12 teachers. Topics will include bilingualism and dialectology,
applied linguistics, culture and civilization of the Spanish-speaking world,
approaches to the teaching of Hispanic literature, and a specialized literature
course focusing on AP literary texts. Special emphasis will be given throughout
the program to the application of national standards in the foreign language
classroom, curriculum development in K-12, the effective incorporation of technology,
and the evaluation and design of media-based activities.
All courses will be conducted in Spanish.
