|gil-ēz| or |gil-is|?

the ‘a’, ‘n’, and ‘h’ in anthony are all silent. (so is the ‘7’, but that is also invisible.) and anthony is usually spelled thony. the ‘e’ in gillies is also silent — someone once told me it’s a scottish thing — but that never affects the spelling.

i spoke too soon

earlier i said davison hall was going to be my new home. turns out that’s not quite true: rutgers philosophy is now going to haunt the college ave campus. so i take it back. what i said about pinstripes still goes, though. more details are here.

wily ol' bill

as announced over at kai’s site, we at last have a draft (fit for public consumption) of our paper affectionately known as “shatner”. it’s on squaring a strong quantificational story about epistemic must with what we call karttunen’s problem. the problem goes like this:

if you’re looking outside seeing it pour cats and dogs then it’s really odd to say it must be raining and perfectly ok to say it’s raining but if you see people come inside with wet umbrellas, galoshes, and slickers then it’s fine to say either — that’s pretty much backwards from what you’d expect if must were a strong necessity modal

since this site is going with me to jersey it’s probably best to get the paper here. now that shatner is under review, we probably won’t be presenting him anymore. which means … we’ll eventually … have … to retire … this … impersonation…gag.

i got the cure

sometimes during the summer months i have trouble sleeping. if that is happening to you, i’ve got some good news: my paper on truth-conditions for indicatives just came out in the july issue of Philosophical Review. you’re welcome.
