|gil-ēz| or |gil-is|?

the ‘a’, ‘n’, and ‘h’ in anthony are all silent. (so is the ‘7’, but that is also invisible.) and anthony is usually spelled thony. the ‘e’ in gillies is also silent — someone once told me it’s a scottish thing — but that never affects the spelling.

new cv

not terribly exciting news. but i am sort of happy that i did the tweaking of both fonts and page layout on my (mostly up-to-date) cv. donald knuth is awesome.

new look

I’m digging this new theme for Rapidweaver (light), and also some very slick markup/markdown plugins. (This is what happens when Mary goes out of town.)

the nsf is nice

My grant to the National Science Foundation was recently funded. (I am, as the kids say, stoked about that.) As part of the project, I want to host a kind of boot-camp-meets-workshop on the semantics and pragmatics of modal and conditional constructions. (Suggestions for cute acronyms welcome.) The idea is to have enough of the boot-camp element that the graduate students here at Michigan get totally up to speed on what they need to know in order to follow the workshop-element.
