Undergraduate Research Opportunity
New Brunswick Faculty of Arts & Sciences
Department of American Studies
Program name and description: Special Problems in American Culture and Advanced Problems in American Culture. These courses are designed for independent work. Some students obtain internships in the communications media, law offices, in P.I.R.G., in museums or other institutions. In addition to on-site work, students choose an adviser in the Department who supervises them in a scholarly project to accompany the work experience permission of department and instructor during preceding term required. Other students participate in one area of scholarly endeavor in depth or make a film or even write a novel. The Department also produces the New Jersey Folk Festival each year. Students can gain valuable experience in managing a large artistic and cultural event. The Folk Festival central staff members, selected through a competitive process, register just as Independent Studies students do. They also attend a weekly seminar. Participation in the Folk Festival is not limited to majors and minors. Preference given to those who have previously volunteered at the Folk Festival.
