Undergraduate Research Opportunity

New Brunswick Faculty of Arts & Sciences

Douglass College

Program name and description:     Mabel Smith Douglass Honors Program (MSDHP). Senior honors program. Students complete a two-semester, 12- credit research project which is supervised by faculty advisors. Proposals are approved by MSDHP committee in Spring of Junior Year; in many cases budgetary requests are granted. Projects span a wide variety of academic disciplines and typically take the form of scientific research projects (experimental, naturalistic, survey) or literary/critical analysis. Since its inception in the Fall of 1991, the MSDHP has grown in size steadily from an enrollment of 12 to its current enrollment of 30. Eligible students are invited to submit a 3-5 page proposal, along with a budgetary request in the Spring of their Junior year, which is approved by a Faculty supervisor chosen by the student. The MSDHP committee, which consists of faculty from a wide variety of academic departments, reviews these proposals and budgetary requests and makes a determination about whether or not to accept the proposal and how much money to offer the person for its execution. The students are held to high scholarly standards and, in a number of cases, may be asked to make revisions to their proposal and/or design. Once the proposal is accepted, students register for 6 credits each semester and present their findings to interested faculty, students, and other guests at an end-of-year symposium, which is followed by a reception for the students and guests.
