In general, a written paper is required for the research component of this course. Excellent papers can be considered in the department sponsored publication or recommended for publication in scholarly journals. All students are required to do research on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor. Students are normally asked to give a preliminary oral report on their research projects before submitting the final written papers. Under special circumstances, formal oral presentation sometimes can be allowed as a substitute for a written paper. In such cases, students will be required to respond to criticism, comments, and questions in a rather formal manner.
