In general, a written paper is required for the research component of this course. Excellent papers can be considered for the department-sponsored publication or recommended for publication in scholarly journals. All students are required to do research on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor. Students are normally asked to give a preliminary oral report on their research projects before submitting the final written papers. Under special circumstances, formal oral presentation sometimes can be allowed as a substitute for a written paper. In such cases, students will be required to respond to criticism, comments, and questions in a rather formal manner.
