Tolkien Grade Distribution

Distribution of scores for course grades in English 321 is listed below. Please note the following: (1) the formula used in computing final numerical grades gave greater weight to the higher of the two scores achieved on hour exams, (2) the second hour exam had extra credit questions, permitting a perfect score of 107 -- a score achieved by two people -- and (3) extra credit was also awarded for Anglo Saxon recitations or final papers the grade on which was higher than the course average computed by the formula described in (1) above.
As you will note, the effect of the above was to raise the distribution curve for the course grade substantially over the somewhat depressing results of the first hour exam.
Grade distribution for the course averages computed on the above principles was as follows:
A: 100 - 90
B+: 89 - 78
B: 77 - 50
C/D/F: 49 - 11
