Chinese Calligraphy
My observation
In the west (Europe, North America and so on),
calligraphy is mostly a technique for people to
make the writing and printing look better.
In east Asia, mathematics is mostly a technique for people to
do calculations efficiently.
On the other hand, in east Asia, calligraphy plays such a funcdamental
role that one cannot imagine a well-developed
culture in east Asia without calligraphy. Similarly, in the west,
mathematics plays such a fundamental role that one cannot imagine
a well-developed culture in the west without mathematics.
My wish is that calligraphy will eventually be developed into
a basic form of fine art in the west and mathematics will eventually
become a foundation of modern thinking in east Asia. The MacArthur
Award to Xu Bing
for his creation of an art form of
English calligraphy is probably
an indication that it is possible for calligraphy to become a
mainstream fine art form in the west. On the other hand, the interest of some
current Chinese mathematicians in more fundamental, more global
and more philosophical problems without immediate applications
is probably an indication that mathematics might also become
fundamental in east Asia to our thinking about the nature, our society and
the interaction between human being and the nature.
