I. Personal Biosketch
Dr. Tuğrul Özel has been Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering since July 1, 2008 and the Director of Manufacturing Automation Research Laboratory at Rutgers University since 2002. He received a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University in 1987, an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Dokuz Eylul University in 1991, and a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1998. Dr. Özel previously worked as Graduate Research Associate at NSF funded Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing and Assistant Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Cleveland State University. He was a summer faculty fellow at NASA Glenn Research Center in 1999, where he conducted research on micro-manufacturing sciences.
Dr. Özel has research articles published in leading manufacturing research
journals such as ASME Journal of Manufacturing
Science and Engineering, International Journal of Machine Tools and
Manufacture, CIRP
Annals, Journal of Materials Processing Technology,
Materials and Manufacturing Processes, and Transactions
of North American Manufacturing Research Institute. His research has been
funded by
National
Science Foundation,
NASA/NJ Space Consortium,
Rutgers Research
Council and industry. He is an active member of SME, ASME, NAMRI, and CIRP
associate member candidate.
He is listed in The Marquis Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and
Who's Who in Science and Engineering. His journal articles have been cited by
over 300 journal articles in the SCI-EXPANDED database (Web of Science)
and his author h-index is 10.

Advanced Manufacturing: Laser-based manufacturing, micro/nano manufacturing for aerospace, automotive and electronics components, medical implants and alternative energy devices.
Computational Machining: Modeling of machining processes, physics-based process simulations, flow stress at high-strain rate, surface integrity, friction, tool wear and coatings.
Intelligent Manufacturing: Modeling and multi-criteria optimization of manufacturing processes, neural networks, particle swarm optimization.
Sustainable and Green Manufacturing: Sustainability and energy efficiency in manufacturing, energy harvesting and manufacturing.
Automation and Control of Industrial Systems: , Automated manufacturing systems, CAD/CAM systems, machine tools, mechatronics, dynamic systems, adaptive, robust and optimal control.
